6 new metro lines
Riyadh, the capital of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is the living place for 5.7 million people. Spread over 4,400 km2 and suffering tremendous traffic problems, the royal administration has launched an ambitious public transport improvement project including the construction of an extensive network of metro lines.
The 6 metro lines, partially underground, will equate to 180km of alignment, serving more than 80 stations. Their construction has been awarded in 3 packages to international consortiums. The BACS consortium (Bechtel –Almabani – CCC – Siemens) is responsible for the design and build of Lines 1 and 2 of the Riyadh metro network.
Line 1 will stretch from North to South through the centre of Riyadh, along the Olaya-Batha corridor, covering 38 kilometres. The line will include 22 stations and 4 transfer stations where it will connect with other new metro lines. Much of Line 1 will be underground. Line 2 will run east to west along King Abdullah Road and will be built mostly at grade (15km) with some elevated sections. This line will run east to west and will extend more than 25 kilometres with 13 stations and 3 transfer stations.
Sixense in charge of the critical areas
BACS Consortium entrusted Sixense together with its local partner NESMA to develop and implement an optimised instrumentation & monitoring system to automatically assess two of the most critical lines on the project.
These two metro lines are aligned with two of the most frequented avenues and pass through the most sensitive areas of the city, presenting high rise buildings as well as complicated soil conditions.
